技术需要被设计

这里有两层含义：
其一，技术可以作为设计的原材料而被应用。设计是一个挖掘需求，策划突破性的解决方案，并付诸实践的过程。解决方案的实现，求助于技术。换句话，就是说，在设计师的工作流程中，技术是我们众多原材料中的一种，除此之外，还有用户需求、市场需求，都可以被视为原材料。
其二，利用设计的创新性和变通性的特点寻找高效率、可执行、具有灵活性的技术解决方案。


国际上，技术与设计结合的比较好的学校之一是荷兰的TU/e，明确提出设计与智能技术结合的观点和实践方向。

Industrial Design of the future is very much the design of intelligent products. What is an intelligent product? Think of products that are linked with services and networks and can optimally adapt to the user. A truly intelligent product is embedded, aware, personalized, adaptive (can learn from past experience) and is partner in interaction. Intelligent products can be found in every aspect of life: work, health, home and play, Industrial Design’s four domains, all application areas for these innovative devices and systems. Intelligent systems require a sound knowledge of users, of electrical engineering and computer science and of the match between technology to user (and vice versa) via design.
